Épinal Council

The Musée de l’Image is a municipal Museum and is managed by Épinal Council.
As a cultural institution the Musée de l'Image attaches great importance to networking with other establishments and would not be able to conduct so many exhibitions, cultural and educational activities or extend its collections, etc., without the help of its valued partners.
Regional Department for Cultural Affairs (DRAC)
Since 1977, the French Ministry of Culture and Communication has had a presence in each region through the Regional Departments for Cultural Affairs. The Lorraine DRAC regularly supports and advises the Museum on its activities, including exhibitions, restoration, acquisition plans, digitisation policies, etc.
Imagerie d’Épinal
The Imagerie d’Épinal, situated beside the Musée de l’Image, was set up in the 18th century and is still operating today. A guided tour of its workshop allows visitors to discover the printing techniques used by the company. The nearby shop is the ideal place to browse around and treat yourself to a beautiful picture. The Musée de l’Image and the Imagerie d’Épinal together form the Cité de l’Image.
Association des Amis des Musées à Épinal [Friends of the Épinal Museums]
The Association des Amis des Musées à Épinal (Musée Départemental d’Art Ancien et Contemporain, Musée de l’Image, Musée du Chapitre) supports the Museums in acquiring works or images and organises joint events, such as the Nuit des Étudiants [Students’ Night] or the Journée des enfants [Children’s Day]. Members of the association are entitled to reduced ticket prices, guided tours, cultural trips, etc.
École supérieure d’Art d’Épinal (E.S.A.E.) [art school]
Inviting students to participate in the Museum’s projects, allowing them to work on the staging of exhibitions or to present their work in solo exhibitions, the Musée de l’Image has worked with the École Supérieure d’Art in many different ways, given the close thematic links between an establishment dedicated to the popular image, and to its links with contemporary creation, and an art school whose educational project is based on the theme of “image and narration".
Conservatoire Gautier d'Épinal [music academy]
When images and music come together, it is not uncommon for the Musée de l’Image and the Conservatoire Gautier d’Épinal to pool their skills and plan joint events, concerts (during the A vendredi midi [midday Friday] cycles and the Nuit des Étudiants) along with organised activities (for the Journée des enfants).
Bibliothèque multimédia intercommunale Épinal / Golbey (BMI) [multimedia library]
Now standing at the heart of the town, the Bibliothèque Multimédia Intercommunale is a distillation of everything that its designers imagined: a functional space, accessible to all, a place of openness to the world, for meetings and dialogues, a space for work and research where heritage meets multimedia technologies.
Scènes Vosges
The towns of Épinal and Thaon-les-Vosges initiated the Scènes Vosges project "to give South Lorraine its own venue for live shows". The establishment is involved in theatre, dance, circus, French song and shows for young people in various settings: the Rotonde theatre, the Louvière Auditorium, Épinal’s municipal theatre and occasionally the Musée de l’Image...
Public Museums, art centres and collections
It is very common for the Musée de l’Image to borrow works of art for its exhibitions, in order to illustrate a particular theme, compare an image with a picture, a contemporary photograph or an object. To do this, it submits requests to borrow works from other institutions.
And of course, you may well see images from this collection in other Museums if they are featuring a particular exhibition.
The Musée Départemental d’Art Ancien et Contemporain [Museum of ancient and contemporary art]
Situated at the other end of the town, this Museum has an exceptional collection of both ancient paintings and contemporary art. Thanks to an agreement between the two establishments, the Musée de l'Image also stores images from the Musée Départemental d’Art Ancien et Contemporain, in addition to its own collections.
Since 2008, the two Museums have been linked once a year by the Chemin des Images, an art trail that snakes through the town, allowing visitors to discover the works of art and images while they walk.
Inspection de l’Éducation nationale [Education Inspectorate]
Thanks to cooperation with the French Education Inspectorate, the Museum is able to keep all the schools in its local area updated about its activities. But links with the Inspectorate go further than that: the Museum also hosts training for teachers based on the principle of Spend time in your Museums – don't just pass through them.
